I was born in East London and spent my childhood in the Stutterheim area on a farm. My first home was a caravan parked on the farm where my Dad was building dams and roads for the farmer.
My brother, Marsten and I attended the Stutterheim High School in the town. We commuted each day from the farm.
I started my working life in East London at the Frere Hospital Laboratory as a Medical Technologist and studied at the Cape Technikon in Cape Town. My first qualified job as a Med Tech at the Frontier Hospital, in Queenstown for 2 years. While I was studying at Cape Technikon I became aware of the Red Cross Children’s’ Hospital which captured my imagination as being a wonderful place to serve and help children.
I moved to Cape Town in 1988, the beginning of 14 amazing years at Red Cross. It is a small hospital where those working there know each other and it feels like being part of a family.
The NHLS came into being in 2004, at which point Red Cross and Groote Schuur Microbiology departments became one. I spent 21 years at GSH. I am richly blessed for having loved my work, teaching the student Med Techs and Registrars and sharing my passion for Microbiology.
Eric and I met at the Rosebank Methodist Church. We share a love for the Lord and of travelling and exploring. Our Round the World trip in 2004 being one of many highlights, as was our Round South Africa trip last year.
I retired 2 years ago and am thoroughly enjoying doing mosaics, exercising every week day and being able to stay in touch more easily with family and friends.
I look forward to getting to know my fellow Probians. Annette and JP introduced us to Probus last year, keeping a promise JP had made 5 years prior, that “I am waiting for you two to retire”.

You have got to love being a pensioner!! I turned 60 in April, and I am living my best life. If you did the calculation in your head, you would have figured out that I was born in 1966, the youngest of five - two brothers and two sisters, one of whom died last year at the age of 70. I am a born and bred Capetonian, having only spent approximately 18 months of my life living outside of the city while doing my national service in the South African Air Force back in the ‘80s. I went back in as Permanent Force, hoping to train as an air traffic controller, but that didn’t work out as planned.
I worked for an insurance company for 13 years, before being asked to go over to the dark side and become an insurance broker. I worked for the brokerage in its various guises for just over 25 years – it was small family-run business until the owners agreed to sell shares in the company to a Durban-based brokerage who were part of a much larger group that eventually took over full control. I retired at the end of March 2025 and now work for the same company on a fixed contract basis looking after one particular client.
Now that the boring stuff is out of the way, my interests are quite wide and varied. Angela and I love travelling, be it local or international. We have been fortunate to have visited approximately 14 countries. Locally, I particularly enjoy visits to national parks where I can fully engage with another interest being photography. Highways may get you to a destination quicker, but we prefer to travel the “blue highways”, which are quieter and take a person through interesting dorpies. Other interests are: watching Premier League Football – You will never walk alone; I sing in a choir and in the worship team at church; reading, mostly non-fiction – I have a particular weakness for second-hand book shops; birding, when the opportunity arises; singing in the car; hanging out with friends; listening to music – I have a particular liking for Bruce Springsteen, but enjoy a wide variety from classical to musicals to light jazz and everything in between; singing in the shower; I prefer live theatre to movies; enjoying good food and wine; I cry in movies; pottering in the garden, a very small garden; cooking. Did I mention that I enjoy singing?
