Ian S. Glass is one of South Africa’s best-known observational astronomers, long associated with SAAO at the Cape and Sutherland.
Born in Ireland, educated at Trinity College Dublin, he arrived in SA in the 1970s, when he introduced infrared techniques, making a major contribution to the development of astronomy in the Country.
He has published widely on variable stars, infrared photometry, the structure of the Galactic Centre and Active Galactic Nuclei. He has written the standard text on Infrared Astronomy.
Since retirement, he has concentrated on historical aspects of astronomy. He has written several books on the subject.
He has travelled widely and has lectured to many groups on astronomical and historical topics.
