Dr John Rogers served as Senior Lecturer (now Emeritus) in the Department of Geological Sciences at University of Cape Town (UCT), retiring at the end of 2009.
His research spans the Quaternary geology and sedimentology of the South African continental margin, including work on aeolianites, palaeo-sea-level change and shelf and deep-sea sediments (manganese nodules)
Over his career he published widely on marine and shelf depositional systems off South Africa and Namibia., mentoring postgraduate students in palaeo-environmental reconstruction. In 2018 he authored the book Geological Adventures in the Fairest Cape: Unlocking the Secrets of its Scenery. His work has contributed to understanding the geological evolution of the Agulhas Bank and the Orange River’s swell-dominated Delta and Mudbelt.
He remains widely cited in marine/continental margin geology.
He led two geological Adventures for Probus in 2014 and 2016 and has given many talks to the Club - as listed below.
